With a massive amount of gratitude to reader Mary (and a little bit of fist-shaking since I spent half of last night checking my makeup’s expiry dates), I wanted to share a link that she posted in a recent comment. The link is to a website (http://checkcosmetic.net/) where you can enter your product’s batch code into and discover its year of manufacture thanks to an impressive database of production dates.
Be warned, ‘cos just like Pringles, it’s pretty addictive stuff. NARS Flaming Dust appears to be the oldest (well, joint oldest) of the ones that I checked… 2004, shameful…
So, tell me… how old is your oldest lipstick? (and are you going to bin it now you know how old it is?!)
The oldest I could check is my Mac Sunbasque blush with is apparently from June 08.
I do have older eyeshadows that I’ve depotted and no longer have the casing from.
I kind of just stick with if it smells bad I’ll bin it though.

Cool website! *nerd* I don’t think anything I have is *that* old…possibly a lipstick from the first year of Uni (6 years?). I’m sticking with the ‘if it smells rank, it’s gone rank’ rule of thumb though.
No way, I just checked a maxfactor foundation I bought about 3 weeks ago- date of manufacture September 2009!? Not buying this one again.
My Chanel Pro Lumiere foundation is from January 2009!

Am going to totally ignore this post 🙂 Having faaaar too many cosmetics of many kinds means that knowing their birthdays will make me twitch. If it looks wrong/smells weird/changes consistency it can head to the bin, if not it continues to be hoarded!
I fear that if I start checking my makeup on this now I shall have none left.
Instead I might do this sneakily before buying any products that are expensive in the near future 🙂
This website is fine to check the shelf life of a product but surely that’s the time from the date of manufacture to the date you open it? The symbol on the label of the product that’s like a tub with it’s lid open and a number on it shows you how many months you have to use a product after it’s open. But I go with my judgement, if it changes, looks or smells weird I’ll bin it.
I’ve always wondered what that symbol meant. So obvious now you say it. Thank you!
