ELF Eye Transformer Review & Swatches

STOP PRESS!: Check out Janice’s review on the Eye Transformer too, her photographs demonstrate the whole ‘smoky eye thing’ better than mine and really give a good idea of what I was trying to explain (lamely!).

The new (to the UK) ELF Eye Transformer is another product that was lurking at the bottom of my goody bag from a recent E.L.F event I attended.  It’s an unusual product, I’ve only ever seen one other like it and I think that it fits in very nicely with the rest of the E.L.F Studio lineup.

It has one main function.  Applied over a dark coloured eyeshadow base, it will have the effect on transforming the base into a new and wonderful shimmering iridescent shade.

Make sense?

Let’s look more closely…

Oh there you go, it says what it does on the back of the box… and for bonus points it gets straight to the point.  Unlike me.

Packaging is identical to the Shimmer Palette, it’s good stuff… solid and sleek.

There are four powder shades: Green, Orange, Pink and Blue.

The powders are quite dusty and I’d recommend giving your brush a quick shake or blow before applying the powder ontop of your base.

First, I laid down 4 black base swatches.  I used a black eye shadow from one of my Sleek Palettes, then I layered each Eye Transformer powder over the base…

Let’s see them in action…

As you can see, from left to right… the powders create green, bronze, purple and blue hues when layered ontop of black bases.  Very pretty and much more interesting than plain old black!

This by itself is pretty cool, but I’ve discovered an even better use for them!

I’m rubbish at true smoky eyes, I look like a panda, I find it hard to blend very strong colours.  It’s a shame then that smokey eyes are *everywhere* at the moment.  Hell, Sleek and GOSH have even brought out palettes in celebration…

Let me demonstrate my crapness…

ELFEyeTransformerBefore

That’s my best effort!  It’s harrrrrrrrrd!

The variations between the black in the crease and the grey on the lid are obvious to me… I just can’t get a smooth blend when I use black, which is why I usually shy away from the shade, favouring greys and browns for crease colours.

However, let’s go over the whole lot with the blue shade from the Eye Transformer Palette…

ELFEyeTransformerAfter

What do you think?

It’s not *so* visible in the photo as it was in person, but adding the Eye Transformer shade seems to bring the other shades in harmony with one another.

My blending isn’t the best, and I should have definitely gone over that outer edge with my blending brush.  But focusing on the actual lid, don’t the colours seem to flow better?  Am I imagining things?

Anyway, all I can say is…

The ELF Eye Transformer is not the best quality product in the world… the powders are pretty chalky and dusty.

Having said that, I’m a sucker for novelty products like this and usually a little disappointed when I try them.  But I’m really enjoying using this combined with the Sleek Graphite palette.  They simply work as they’re supposed to, opening up many more opportunities for colour.

What are your thoughts?  Have you tried the ELF Eye Transformer Palette? Want to?

I must admit, I haven’t done much more with mine than play on the back of my hand! Love the effect the blue has on your smokey eye!

  2. Get Lippie says:

That looks really nice, and an interesting product!

  3. Sugar says:

looks great, I want this from elf now 😀 thanks for review:)

  4. Tali says:

Thats a great idea for a product. shame it wasnt better quality.. then again for the price its a great buy!!

  5. Lisa says:

I fail at the smokey eye look every time hehe, my blending sucks. Yours looks gorgeous with the blue over the top especially.

I can’t wait to try this though, I ordered it on Friday, did you try it underneath shadows as well?

  6. Connie says:

the eye transformer certainly added a certain oomph the look! I agree with you. Novelty products are not to have but they may not get a lot of use!

  7. Janice says:

LoL! we both had just the same thought about this… almost the same but my smokey was layered with all different colors instead of just 1 color like urs… :p

plus… my smokey eyes skill is a lot more worse than urs… T_T

  8. Louise says:

Wow something made my think they were creams for some reason – they are definitely on my wishlist now after your pics xx

  9. ndoodles says:

Oh wow, I did not realize that is what it could do!

  10. @Sirvinya – It is good for playing with, I was showing Mr. L. “look, add a bit of thisssssssss and TA-DA!!” He looked as unimpressed as only a man being forced to play makeup with his wife can.

@Get Lippie – It is unusual isn’t it!

    @Sugar – You’re welcome!

@Tali – For the money, it’s pretty darn good… if only it were a touch less talc-like though.

@Lisa – Thank you, smokey eyes are too difficult! I haven’t tried it underneath shadows, let me know what you think!

@Connie – Are you a sucker for novelty stuff too? I dunno how I’ve resisted most of the Benefit makeup line *ouch!*

@Janice – oops, sorry chick! I left you out of the comments first time round!

I got to your message, saw your post – added a link to the top of mine… then forgot to come back down here and reply.

That’s such a great example of what I was trying to say in my usual rambling way! You can really see the difference applying it like that has made! It’s made your blending skills look awesome! I think the flash on my camera ruined the effect a bit on mine. Smokey eyes are *so* difficult to get right, anything that makes it a little easier is a good thing!!

@Louise – The Shimmer Palette is cream… maybe that’s what you’ve got it confused with? xx

    @Ndoodles – haha cool huh?

  11. Redtiger21 says:

Ooh I saw this on youtube, been hoping you’d do a review on it! Well I think your smoky eye is pretty good- I certainly couldn’t do any better!! I like the effect the pallette gives- certainly worth the money by the look of things. I saw a tutorial from filthygorgeousmakeup on YT using this- she just applied a brown powder shadow over her lid, then applied the green from this pallette on top- it was lovely, gave a nice earthy green, and she blended it with a soft brown shadow in the crease. Just an idea, as I’m not great with cream shadows.

  12. Maria says:

it’s a great product! i love it!!! i always bring this palette when i travel….or when i’m out for all day!with a dark base and some mascara!!
in this way i can bring less eyeshadows with me!!
    by the way….great make up!
    xo xo!

  13. D says:

This reminds of those “magic” pens which change colour. Looks like a pretty cool idea for a product 🙂

  14. Mary Susan says:

It looks sooo beautiful. Wow, I must buy these now! Thanks so much for review and swatching(though I would’ve liked to see the transformers and black alone for reference). As for your eyelook: (1) It looks good without the blue, (2) the blue make it look great and that was an excellent idea, (3) your makeup still looks better than mine. You are phenomenal! Thanks!… an, erm, excuse my American English: I know from experience a lot of people prefer “real English”; I think the whole dialect change was due to region changes and language development.
