I’m a total lip liner eschewer. I love that word… eschewer… makes me think of nuts.
It just seems like one of those extra steps that quite frankly, I could do without. Same as applying my lipstick with a brush. I have a beautiful NARS lip brush that NEVER gets used. I just don’t see the necessity?
I was killing 10 minutes last night before I had to be somewhere and my fingers alighted on a Laura Mercier lip pencil in Petunia. I think I bought it off a blog sale or stole it or something. I certainly wouldn’t have paid PROPER money for a lip liner… heaven forbid!
So anyway… yeah… I had a go at lining my lips. I usually go a bit wonky around the cupid’s bow, but this time I was pretty spot on.
Then I filled my lips in with it like wot we is supposed to do..
Finally, I dabbed some Revlon Colorburst in Soft Rose ontop and it looked pretty decent. Sharp, defined… dare I say it… sexy.
But more importantly?
GOD THAT LIPSTICK LASTED!
I came home 4 hours later and it looked amazing still! It had obviously faded a little but the undercoat of liner really gave the illusion of picture-perfect lips. And the best bit? My lips didn’t suffer any extra dryness from adding this step.

But now I need your help please ladies (I’m a drain, I know). Are most lip liners created equal? I’m still not converted enough to drop lots of money on them but I want a stash to play with and I want it QUICK!
What are your favourite budget liners? I’m thinking maybe NYX?

ive found myself using lipliners just to add color effects to the lippie im wearing.
i could literally do with out. but if i wanna change the color of a lippie or add an effect ill add a lipliner
ex. i can wear mac’s pink poodle by it self. love the color and the texture. i usually wear it in the day time. at night i add current liner and kinda fill in my lips and then i add the gloss its more of a night time effect
I quite like No7, I can’t remember the shade I have but I usually whack that all over my lips and put on some gloss (not too shiny) over the top.
That fades away to a stain during the day and I quite like it.
Another range for lipliners which I think is greatly overlooked is the Natural Collection they have in Boots, I have a shade from them called Rose. It looks intimidating to me because it’s quite a bright pink for a brown skinned person to pull off but take it over the lips and follow with gloss and it lasts the day.
However, the NC ones are slightly drying and do drag if you don’t warm them up on the back of your hand.
I’d say No7 are the way to go, plus you don’t have to sharpen them, they’re twist tops.
I normally skip lip liner too, but recently picked up an NYX lip pencil in Natural/810 (very pretty, slightly brick/rose nude) and I love it. Really ups my lipgloss game!
Im a huge fan of Rimmel & Revlon for liners. (Lip & eyebrow in general!)
Mac is great too but i find their liners can be a bit hard and therefor impossible to apply on cold winter mornings.
Barbara Daly at Tesco have a few, but they are a touch drying.
MAC, in my mind, are great. Not cheap though! Cream o’Spice is pretty much a perfect nude for me.
I have heard that MUFE (Make Up For Ever) lip liners are the best because they are waterproof, meaning you and eat and drink and they stay on – they only come off with soap.
I really really want to try them, but haven’t gotten around to it b/c I’m on a budget and they are $17 a pencil. but you should try them!
A second shout for Boots ‘Natural Collection’ lip liners, I have one in ‘Almond’, which is more a peachy nutmeg colour – a great nude. Otherwise, ‘Collection 2000’ liners in swivel up stick – I can’t remember the exact name, but they’re creamy and leave a bit of a stain behind 🙂
I’m going to try that one tomorrow, I’ve been looking for a peach with a hint of brown to it, thanks!
I have a couple of NYX nude lip liners that I use all the time. But they come in ridiculously looooong pencils. I might have to saw them in half just so they’re more easily transportable.
I prefer wearing lipliner all over my lips than lipstick… just can’t get the hang of lipstick!
I quite like the NYX ones! I have Natural, which works well as a go-to one for most colors, and a couple others…I think a mauve and a couple red ones. Otherwise, MAC.
Gosh lip liners are pretty good. They are soft like the eyeliners.

Rimmel Exaggerate lipliners are awesome – the Red Diva one is moisturising enough to be a lipstick in itself!
Another one for the No7 lipliner in nude, I swear it goes with everything!! love that one. I like playing with other ones, was gonna say GOSH, I’ve just ordered a mineral one from ELF, but the no 7 one pretty much HG xx
I really love my Clinique lupliner in Nudey. Sometimes I just line my lips very slightly and put some lipgloss or a neutral lipstick on top and it immediatelly looks more polished. I have read some great reviews about the ELF natural lipliner and Armani lipliners (but the Armani is not very budget friendly, well, depends on the budget).
GOSH has the best lip liners, and they are not expensive! Give it a try!
Definitely NYK or even ELf. I find that liners give me that perfect pout….and some lipsticks I cannot wear without liner or I looked washed out…like nudes….i MUST line my lip to be able to pull them off
Thanks for this post – I’m usually an eschewer of lip-liner too and somewhat baffled by them! So good to get everyone’s tips on which ones work best. Would also love to know which lip-stains people recommend.
I am a NYX fan but I do not like their lipliners.
I love Rimmel’s l/ls..especial the exaggerate ones. They last and are creamy.
I am a nurse who does twelve hour shifts and I love using lip liners to lock a bit of color in place.
I love shiseido liners–they are creamy, pigmented, and long-wearing. They really feel like nothing is on at all.
Mac liners come in a variety of shades but aren’t as soft.
I love the Buxom big and healthy lip stick range–again lightweight, and with a bit of a minty kick to them.
Lancome makes nice ones (I just recently purchased one from ACW for $5!).
I’m not a big fan of Bobbi Brown liners. I do like make up forever’s color offering but I find the liners to be a bit drying on my lips.
Actually, I often use lipliner completely filled in instead of lipstick (often just for the gorgeous colour of the liner). If it tends to be one of the drying side, I just add lipbalm underneath/lipgloss ontop.

chambor has these lip liners called lip tattoo. they are quite soft and make the lipstick last forever!
Glad I wasn’t the only one who didn’t really ‘get’ lip liners!
I like my MAC Lip Pencils and my Nyx Lip Pencils. If you want clear, I also like the Too Faced borderline Lipliner in clear.
for prestige lipliner I like Estee Lauder or MAC, for budget I heard that NYX jumbo lip pencils are really good…
My lips must be unnaturally parched; that lipliner trick makes my lips look like crumpled up crepe paper, even when I exfoliate and moisturise them first. Liner is something I really only use when I want to be extra-fancy, and when I do use it, I use it after my lipstick, to reshape/define the contours that I’ve painted on. I have “Dolly Pink” by Nyx and I like it. I also like “Silk” by Prestige. To me, lipliner is like mascara… I’m going to use it up in a couple of months anyway, so there’s not much point in spending big money on it.
NYX mauve is perfection made lipliner …..

I love MAC Magenta lip pencil. Jordana has great lip pencils at affordable prices. About 99 cents here in U.S.
Prestige Lipliners are freaking amazing and they come in so many of colours. I’ve tried LOADS of different liners. Too many, probably. I have a drawer full :S Prestige manage to be as good as my higher end ones whilst being a fraction of the price! If you try one go for silk. It’s fabulous under most pinks and nudes 🙂 x
