Kryolan Supra Color as a base/primer

Posted by Lipglossiping On October - 13 - 2009

I bought the Kryolan Supra Color to use as a base for my mineral eyeshadows which tend to apply sheerly without a solid base not to mention the fall out if they don’t have something to sitck to!

supracolor

It’s basically a black grease paint.  Upon opening, it has a clear layer of grease ontop which I ‘patted’ off with a piece of kitchen roll until I got to the black stuff below!

As you can see by the swatch above, it’s a very deep and pigmented black which applies smoothly.  You can use a brush or your finger to apply, I’ve been using a synthetic flat shadow brush to apply which seems to work really well.

I then pat my mineral/loose eyeshadows ontop of a thin layer of the Supra Color.  The shadows stick really well to the Supra Color with minimal fall out and even more impressively, I’ve discovered that I actually do have some blending ability!  It is SO much easier to blend out eyeshadows over this base than it is over UDPP.

Here’s the finished result:

Unfortunately (and as I mentioned yesterday) my eyeshadows start to crease after a mere 3 hours 🙁  UDPP holds them firm for at least 9 hours on me.

The picture below was taken after 3 hours wear:

What a shame huh?

JoBetterDays & GraceLondon both recommend I try it over a little UDPP.  I’m really hopeful that’ll make the difference because my GOD I don’t want to give up my new-found blending abilities!  Imagine… colour that lasts AND looks fantastic!

Not too much to ask… is it?

Do you wait for it to dry before you put the colour on? That’s always my biggest worry when using a “wet” base. I have coloured my lids in with black pencil before and that’s quite dry and it holds the colour for ages.

Creasing is so annoying, I used to not use UDPP when doing a basic neutral eye to work because I thought the creasing wouldn’t look as bad but it looks horrible so now I use it all the time and the difference is truly amazing.

Isn’t it a great feeling when you learn to blend properly?!

No, I just whack it straight on… does greasepaint even really “dry”?

Creasing looks terrible to me now, one benefit to hooded eyelids though is when I blink, if it’s only creased in the “crease” my eyelids don’t stretch enough to be able to see the creasing unless I raise my eyebrows – does that make any sense at all?

Blending is gooooood, still struggle like anything over UDPP this is a flippin’ breeze.

Can you buy Kryolan Supra Colour online? I’d like to give it a go.

  4. Hi Alicat!

I bought mine from Charles Fox (http://www.charlesfox.co.uk/) – their website is currently being redesigned and I asked in the shop if we’d be able to buy stuff online afterwards. The SA said yes. She didn’t know a timeframe… but you can buy from them by email ’till then…

They have a £3.95 delivery charge. The 8ml (smallest one – which is what I have) Kryolan Supra Color in Black is £5.15.

    email for ordering is: make-up@charlesfox.co.uk

Let me know what you think, if you get one!

  5. @Alicat – I’ve found it cheaper online here at Dauphines: http://www.dauphines.co.uk/p-kryolan-supracolor-grease-paint-.htm

    £5.15 + £2.53 p&p.

Black is shade 071 – Hope that helps!

I don’t dabble in grease for eyes because I spend so long getting it off my nose and forehead that I don’t want it to set up camp on my eyes.

I found UDPP hard to blend over for a bit and then I started using the tinies amount (it still works!) and putting it on my lids and then fully blending it in, not so much that it vanishes but so that you can still see parts of your natural lid underneath.

I understand perfectly what you mean about hooded eyes. Proper application of UDPP (which you get through trial and error) will really help. I remember in my early days of using UDPP, I whacked on a thick layer and put some light brown shadow over it, my eyes came out looking white, not the look I was going for.

Looking forward to seeing what happens with a little UDPP with it as it certainly looks great!

It’s creasing because it’s greasy. Try the Kryolan Aquacolors instead. You apply it wet(or sometimes it will go on dry, depending on the consistency) and then apply your eyeshadows when it is almost dry. It then sets with the eyeshadow and won’t move. It’s worth a try. I love the Aquacolors. They are the best eyeshadow bases ever!

  9. Deborah says:

hmmmm the grease would definitely be a factor. you might try leaving it to dry and dusting some translucent powder over it. never know. would work. UDPP is a definite. It would help it loads more. Let us know how it works.

    Purple is gorgeous on you!

  10. Sirvinya says:

The creasing is because the Supracolour is so oily. The Aquacolours work so much better as bases. The Aquacolours are water activated so you need to apply with a wet brush. Wait for it to dry then apply the pigment over the top.

  11. Luce says:

What’s the eyeshadow you’ve used with it? It’s lovely!

  12. AlicatAHL says:

The Aquacolours are incredibly scary colours….!

I looked on Dauphines and there are so many on there, which one should I be looking for?

I might try the Supra Colour in the mean time.

  13. AlicatAHL says:

I bought the Supra Color in black today. I’ll let you know how it goes!

  14. @Rhamnousia – grease monster! I *do* only use a smidge of UDPP and I still can’t blend for shit. Use this stuff and I’m a freakin pro! (yes, I am shutup.)

@Eliza, will do another FOTD soon!

@TackyBlueEyeshadow – I knew it was you who used the aquacolours…. do they do one in black?

@Deborah – Thanks chick, I’ll try your tips!

@Sirvinya – Excellent, I’m going to definitely try those, any recommendations for colours?

@Luce – *snigger* it’s a primark dust one with BarryM Purple in the crease.

  15. @AlicatAHL – Oooh exciting! Please do let me know how it works for you!

  16. AlicatAHL says:

It arrived in the post this morning, and guess what? I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I must have quite dry eyelids because although I didn’t exactly layer it on, by 5pm this evening it had hardly creased at all! I used a BarryM dazzle dust in Winter Berry ontop, and it looked stunning. I used my new 2000 Calorie mascara, and all in all I was so chuffed with the results!

So, now I’m thinking about other colours in the Supra Color range. Any suggestions? Something a bit lighter for a less dramatic look? The colour swatches on the website are dodgy to say the least. Has anyone got any other colours they can recommend?

  17. […] that’s 4 hours… an hour longer than last time.  I don’t see any improvement in the creasing issue do […]

  18. @AlicatAHL

Oh wow! I’m so pleased you do… what a fab find for you then, I really wanted this to work for me but my eyelids must be just too oily 🙁

They do have some skintone shades and white which should increase vibrancy without making the shade darker? Although the swatches on the site aren’t brilliant… I reckon you wouldn’t go too wrong with a medium skintone shade considering it’s gonna get covered with shadow anyway?

If they’d have worked for me, I’d have gotten a black, white and as neutral as I could guesstimate.

Pleased you were happy with the 2000 Calorie aswell! Yay!

Thanks so much for coming back and letting me know how you got on with it all, it’s appreciated xx

  19. Check out the colour chart on Kryolan’s website here for skintone colours: http://www.kryolan.com/en/index.php?mnu=32&cid=113&id=115&rel=1

Not sure if Daphines sell the skintone ones though.

  20. sunita says:

Hi, I was wondering if it is safe to use in the eye area? I did use this supra color grease paint in white on my eyelids few hours ago and now I feel kinda uneasiness in my eyes!!

    • Hi Sunita, I’ve never heard anyone say that the Supra Colors weren’t eye safe and many use them successfully in that area. Perhaps check with an online retailer who should be able to contact the company directly to check for you x
