False Eyelashes… A Risky Business?

Posted by Lipglossiping On May - 7 - 2010

With bananas that like to masquerade as fingers, I’m not particularly adept at the whole false eyelash thing.  The number of times I’ve attempted to falsify my lashes can be counted on one hand.

I need to practice and improve my technique because a well-chosen pair of lashes can make a huge difference to an overall look…

…not well chosen.

It was with interest then that I read an eye health warning from The Eyecare Trust.

“Failing to follow a good hygiene routine when wearing false lashes puts you at risk of suffering irritation and nasty eye infections such as conjunctivitis and bacterial keratitis.”

Iain Anderson, Chairman of the Eyecare Trust continues: “Common symptoms of these eye infections include: red, sore or gritty eyes; a watery discharge; sensitivity to the light; headaches; blurred vision and in severe cases, reduced visual acuity.”

Whoulda thunk it?

Here are The Eyecare Trust‘s top tips for using false lashes safely.

1. Wash your hands before applying fake lashes
2. Use a good quality adhesive
3. Never stick them to your own lashes (always glue them to the eyelid and following the manufacturer’s instructions)
4. Never wear more than one pair at once
5. Clean them thoroughly before reuse
6. Throw them away at the first sign of wear and tear (most lashes have a lifespan of around four wears)
7. Store them in a clean / dry case
8. Never share your lashes with anyone else
9. Don’t stick jewels or other embellishments onto the lashes
10. Always remove them before you go to bed.

Do you adhere to the guidelines?

    hahahahaahahahahah
The only guideline I follow is the number 1 and 8 one.
Well I wash my hands, do some makeup, apply lashes, do some more makeup.
I swear by eyelashes and I would never consider going on a night out without a pair of lashes. If you are the girl with too many lipsticks, I am the girl with too many lashes. I have a serious addiction. If you’re still practising, I suggest the naturalites glamour 101 from eylure (£4.99) The glue that comes with it is fab, and is perfect for carry in your handbag in case you’re scared they’re coming off, and the lashes don’t even need shortening. Just for the sake of practise apply them without any make up at all, on a bare lid. The mistake lots of people do, as jo pointed out on her blog, is that people start practising with poor quality lashes which dont even curve right and sit right on your lid. xx

I have to say the only two of the above I don’t follow are 4 and 6. I wear 2 and 3 pairs at a time sometimes and I find as long as I pick off all the dry glue/makeup everytime and keep them shaped in the case that they come in, they’re fine.

There are some styles I really like and can’t get anymore so I feel like as long as I’m careful, keep them clean, and I’m the only one wearing them, I’ll be ok.

  3. I wish I wasn’t such a ham fisted freak when it comes to fitting lashes, I can never get them in the right place on the lid and they always end up peeling away from one end within the first few minutes. Frustrating!

I am going to persevere though as I’d love to wear some at my friend’s wedding! xx

Ive got this fantastic false lash cleaner from Japan that makes keeping false lashes neat and tidy and easily re- usable a doddle!

I wish i found it earlier, as before it was picking off glue with tweezers and often loosing many a false hair along the way!

I can’t be bothered. I don’t have fake nails or fake lashes. Plus I have hideously sensitive eyes. I can’t even wear mascara at the moment. That’s how bad it is!

  6. Lillian says:

I stick to some of them, i clean them and things but i also share them and use them a lot more than 4 times 😛

  7. Serafia says:

I thought it would be kind of common sense to keep up with a good hygiene routine whenever eyes are concerned with or without false lashes. It applies to brushes, makeup, wearing contacts, pretty much everything one puts on their face. Keep it clean, isn’t it common sense?

  8. Oh god I never even thought about getting eye infections from false lashes 😐 makes sense though

Of course I stick to the guidelines!! (coughs loudly). I had always been seriously lame at applying falsies, but watching Pixiwoo on youtube taught me better than any of the other tutorials I watched, it’s as much a confidence thing as anything for me.
