Michel Mercier Detangling Hairbrush vs. Tangle Teezer

Posted by Lipglossiping On November - 28 - 2011

My hair is prone to breakage, and thanks to my PCOS – there isn’t as much of it as I would like which means that I have to be very careful when detangling my hair not to end up with more on the brush than on my head.  I currently use my Tangle Teezer on wet hair and my Mason Pearson on dry hair.

I attended the launch of a new product from internationally acclaimed hairdresser Michel Mercier, a new detangling hair brush available in three varieties, each suited to a different hair type.  To choose the right brush for your hair, you simply need to check which colour you’re picking up:  Pink = Fine Hair, Green = Normal Hair, Blue = Thick or Afro Hair.  The difference between the three varieties lies in the flexibility of the bristles used.  The coarser the hair type, the more rigid the bristles need to be in order to combat the tangles.

The brush is made up of a patented system which involves placing 428 bristles (who wants to count ’em?) positioned at different heights across the surface with a unique geometric distribution which helps to disperse the pressure placed on hair during brushing.

But does it work, and is it better than the Tangle Teezer?

Michel Mercier Detangling Brush*

I found that it works very well for detangling my hair, especially when my hair was dry but the efficiency came at a cost.  The Mercier Brush gave me more discomfort during use than the Tangle Teezer.  However, it really couldn’t be faulted for it’s rapid detangling properties… I often find that the Tangle Teezer misses tangles on the underside of my hair thanks to its very flexible bristles – the Mercier’s bristles are stronger, I think this will prove very popular for those with thick hair.

Sadly, I experienced more breakage with this one than my Tangle Teezer, probably just because it was more effective and gave me more discomfort but I’d rather have to section my hair to detangle than lose it on the brush.

Tangle Teezer

I was also hoping for better things from the Michel Mercier design.  The Tangle Teezer is notorious for flying out of unsuspecting hands thanks to the rubbish grip it offers.  At first glance, you’d think that the Michel Mercier solves this with the inclusion of a chunky handle but sadly, the handle has quite a strong taper which means that it doesn’t feel as secure as I would have liked.

Overall it’s a real mixed bag.  If my hair were stronger and thicker, I’d probably prefer it to my Tangle Teezer but as things stand, it’s back to my Tangle Teezer/Mason Pearson combination for the time being.

The Michel Mercier Detangling Brush is priced at £14.95, and available from www.michelmercier.co.uk and selected salons

I didn’t realise PCOS meant problems with your hair. I’ve got to go back for another scan in Feb to see if I have any more cysts on my ovary (I have one at the moment). My specialist suspects I *might* have PCOS. I didn’t realise how much my hair has changed until I found an old photo from about 10 years ago and my hair was thick and lush. Now it grows so the ends are like pubes, but it’s not split ends, it just grows with a crap texture. Bah humbug. It could also be caused by hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) which I’ve had for years.

Hate the tangle teaser, got it for my autistic daughter who screams the house down when I try and brush her hair and it was useless. Maybe I am doing it wrong but it doesn’t work on my hair either. I have baby fine hair and my daughter is lucky to have really thick hair. May have to try this brush on her :0) xxxJoolsxxx

  3. Jasmine says:

I found my hair too thick for the tangle teezer, so I’m very excited to hear about this one – it sounds like it might tick all the right boxes for me!

  4. Jamilla says:

I use a squirt of Kerastase Oleo Relax after towel drying my thick, dry hair – works a treat! No more tangles.

  5. luxiehoney says:

I’m getting the hair thing- lately handfuls of it see to be coming out :S I’m not that worried right now because my hair is thick, curly and halfway down my back so I’m exactly short of it, but I do worry I’ll get thin hair at some point! I should maybe look these up… xxx

  6. Catriona says:

Do you find the Tangle Teaser helps stop hair being pulled out? I have fine, thin hair (always have) that sheds ridiculously amounts – I have cream carpets so it’s really noticeable! I use a wide tooth comb on wet hair and don’t brush my hair much but I don’t think it’s made a difference.

    • Britta says:

My hair is the same way! I love my tangle teaser because so little is pulled when I use it :) it is so great! I also have a paddle brush I use when I’m drying my hair… I clean it out all the time :/ I’m starting to think I should t even use it!

  7. Leigh says:

I use the Denman Tangle Tamer on my thick wavy hair, it’s fab.

  8. kelly says:

I need some kind of tangling free implement for my daughter, she sometimes sobs of a morning if I don’t loosely plait her hair before bed and it knots

  9. Emma says:

I quite like the idea of having them for different hair types. I’ve got a tangle teaser which tends to work well for my super-thick hair, but I’d be tempted to try this as it’s got a handle.

  10. Wordbird says:

Oh gosh yes, PCOS affects your hair! It’s the hormones. The PCOS messes with your hormones, raises your testosterone levels. So if you’ve got male pattern baldness in your family, you can start to lose hair like you would if you were a bloke.
The good news is that Regaine/Minoxidil works. The bad news is that you have to keep using it forever once you start on it or the hair that grows back will fall out and never grow back. (Please check that information before taking it as gospel.) Phillip Kingsley the trichologist is very well worth reading on the subject.

It’s also worth getting your iron and B vitamins checked by a blood test through your GP, as you need high enough levels to be able to make hairs.

    • Male pattern baldness runs down the mother’s side doesn’t it? I shall remember to closely inspect my older brother’s hairline next time I see him! 😉

      • I think I’m making enough to keep on top of it. No baldy patches (yet – touch wood etc. etc.) I just lose enough every shower/hair brush to make me uncomfortable about it and I don’t have the thick hair I used to have as a teen.

It’s such a total bitch of a ‘syndrome’. The day when they can transplant the hairs from my chin onto my head will be a very happy one!

  11. Season says:

I have only tried the Michele Mercier Untangle amazing – I used the one for thick hair, I used it for the first time on my dry knotted unbrushed hair and it was amazing brushed like there were no tangles and there was only 3 hairs in the brush so no pulling out my hair! Amazing.

  12. Christina says:

After watching the commercial, I thought wow! could I be using the wrong brush this whole time? I bought the brush for my daughter who has fine hair and a very sensitive head. In my excitement I even brushed her hair on the way home from the mailbox, boy was conned, she flinched and said she will just use her old brush. To add to injury I was roped into getting another brush, the phone service you call to order the brush says you get a complimentary free brush just pay $5.95, so at the end of it all I have two bad brushes for nearly $30.

  13. Erica says:

PSEASE READ BEFORE U NORDE FROM THEM!!!I order my brushes over one week ago. Their warehouse is located in Massachusetts so it should take them no more than 5 business days for you to receive the items no matter where u live in the US but as it stands now the brushes won’t even leave their warehouse for at least 3 weeks after u place your order. When I placed the order I paid for rush shipping thinking that I would receive the brushes within the week being that they charged me over $31.00 just in shipping charges. I tried calling their customer service number 1800-338-3394 and while I listened to elevator music and ” your call is impportant to us, thank you for your patience and continue to call blah blah blah” over and over for over 40 minutes ( I have a timer on my cell phone, so I left it on speaker and did the dishes and vaccumed my room and after 40 min they still had not picked it up so I hung up and went to their web site to try to email them. It turnnout that the address they say is ” the best way to contact customer service” http://www.customerstatus.com is not an email address but a place to check your order status and if there is a ploblem with your order good luck trying to talk to them on the phone once they have already taken your money. There was no email address to contact customer service. By the way, once you fill out your order with your name, address and credit card info they sell your private info to third parties. Within 2 days I placed my order with them I got telemarketers who told me they got my info from Michel Mercier’s website. When I was able to talk to someone at Michel Mercier I asked the customer serviice rep ( Steve ) about the telemarketers and he said: “They did not get the information from us.” So I told him they had told me that they did, so then Steve said: ” They grabbed it from our website”, and so I asked him: Are you telling me you have an unsecured website? to that he said: “We use a third party who is unsecure”. I got pissed and asked how he is not embarressed to state that so bluntly like it’s nothing and he didnt have anything else to say. I told him I would be posting reviews about them online and that I couldn’t believe they were still in business nd that I would never order from them again and I hung up. Please don’t order from this company. If you want a no tangle brush order the Macademia Oil one.

    • Chris says:

I just ordered the brush(es)… The commercial said $14.95 for two brushes. Sounded fair enough. I am getting older and my hair is thinning. I thought, this will be great if I lose less hair when I am brushing it. I want to keep what I have left! BUT after I placed my order (there is no page to review the total before you submit your order) the final bill came to $53.70!!!!! Thank goodness I didn’t order anything else! Because before they let you check out they keep asking you if you want a 2nd brush (I was unsure if this was the free one and I should say yes?) My instincts said to click no. Good thing too. Then they try to sell you like 5 other items before finalizing you gigantic bill. How is it that it costs $53.70 for a $14.95 order?!?! How much can shipping possibly cost for 2 brushes!? I too went to the customer service website. Which is ridiculous. There is no customer service!… Terrible. This brush had better work fabulous, AND last me a friggin life time!!!! I feel scammed…

      • Randy says:

Wish I had read these posts first! I just did the same thing. Wanted one brush and somehow ended up with three! Two at $14.95 and one at discounted price of $9.95. Thought they were offering a reduced price “for today only”. Shipping was supposed to be free but turns out — only if you go to a third party site for a rebate offer which includes a bulls#*t trap of a monthly membership which I was wise enough not to agree to. So without this “rebate”, they’re slamming me $23.80 for shipping alone! Website clearly stated $5.95S&H. My total order came to $69.14 and I only wanted 1 brush! I don’t think they give you the option with the second brush, I think it’s automatic. And you pay the shipping twice regardless. Somehow I think they’re gonna send me 6 brushes total. Order went through without confirmation! You’re just slammed with all this crap at the end. And today’s Sunday, so of course I can’t do anything until tomorrow…maybe…

        • Jo says:

Same thing here. I just placed my order and it totalled 36.80 (over 11 in shipping) and it said I was getting 1 at 14.95 and second for 9.95? I called customer service and of course my order had not processed so she could not review with me. She said I probably ordered 2. I DID NOT!!. She said to call back after I see my order on the customer status .com site then we can reivew it. I WILL be calling back demanding a cancellation of my order. Ridiculous!!!!

  14. Ashley says:

I ordered the tangle brush, it works amazing. I bought one and got one free so, I gave the other one to my teenager daughter that has really thick hair. I have super fine hair, so after I used it the results were shiny, sleek and smooth. I have been using this brush for over a month and will not go back to my Walmart brand brush.
