Precision Nails R03 – VIP Very Important Polish

Posted by Lipglossiping On November - 4 - 2010

Looking for something vampy, glossy and with just a hint of purple?

Precision Nails in shade R03 VIP Very Important Polish might be what you’ve been looking for…

Another great Winter shade and a winner for lovers of dark, vampy nails… VIP is a 3 coater that makes my fingernails look like black cherries!

Consistent with the other shades in the range, I’m really appreciating these dark polishes now that I’ve chopped my nails a little shorter.

Precision is available to buy online from their website or Venus Nail & Beauty with bottles priced at an extremely affordable £5.99 (ish) each.

Poundland Ponderings…

Posted by Lipglossiping On November - 4 - 2010

So, I was in Poundland yesterday afternoon…  I was TOTALLY on my way to DIOR (I wasn’t), I just got kinda bundled through the door (I didn’t)…. swept in on an errant wave of pedestrians if you will… (nuh uh).

Anyway… aside from the HIDEOUS Christmas musak that they were blaring at 140db and the one sales assistant that I couldn’t look at because she had a bogey on her cheek… I was kinda impressed!

I’ve decided to economise on some of the essentials in order to free up the cash for some guilt-free luxury purchases.

I need a list.  Come on ladies, you’re savvy (if not always frugal), what are the things I can stop hammering my Boots Advantage card with?  I know I love collecting the points (I’m at £70 this year *whoop!*)…. but, it’s not really the most economical way to shop is it?  I’ve probably overspsent triple that in order to collect those points.

I’m not prepared to compromise on quality, because afterall… we’re talking the essentials here.

I don’t wanna swap my bath smellies for cheapies, ‘cos they’re exactly the kind of things I wanna luxe out on.  Same goes for shampoos until I’ve pinned down exactly what irritates my scalp.

But what are the things I could pick up for pennies and not really notice any differences other than to my purse?

Edit: Just to clarify for my one ‘reader’ who got her rocks off on a bit of comment spite this afternoon… I don’t think I’m ‘above’ shopping in Poundaland… I am the pikey queen of discount Maryland cookies.  So shut up and get a sense of humour.  You’re in luck ‘cos they’re on 2 for 1 next to the Toffifee.

Haus of Gloi – A spooky first order!

Posted by Lipglossiping On November - 3 - 2010

I made my first Haus of Gloi order a few weeks ago after a gentle nudge (ok, shove) from the lovely LondonMUGirl.  I’d first heard about HoG earlier this year after Fyrinnae’s chemist had tweeted about the company… but after a quick look at the Etsy store, I had decided that I really didn’t need more soapy goodness.

I was wrong.

I made a small order to begin with.  2 sample 2oz/56g pots of HoG wares in their limited edition Halloween scents.

The packaging is adorable and the thought, artistry and love that clearly goes into those labels really pleases me.  Haus of Gloi is a small, independent business… a husband and wife team dedicated to producing 100% vegan products and feeling-evoking fragrances.

Pumpkin Queen Pumpkin Butter – 2oz ($4.50):

The Haus of Gloi pumpkin butters are heavier than their normal body emulsions, which for the cold winter ahead… is perfect.  Pumpkin Queen is described as gentle hay pillows, pumpkin, ripe peaches dusted with clove and nutmeg, dried summer herbs, and lastly, a lovely crown of amber. The first thing I can smell are the peaches, but it’s a really juicy, non-synthetic scent backed by a spicier pumpkin undertone that smells freshly baked.  It’s a gourmand scent for sure.  Some may find it a little too sweet, cloying… I love it.  I love it so much, I’ve just bought the perfume oil.

The butter is rich and silky… it sinks into my skin in under a minute and leaves me feeling soft to the touch.  I love this formulation and I’m very sad that these richer products are limited.  The most inspiring thing about this product though?  Longevity.  I have never applied a body butter with a fragrance that literally and truly lingers until bedtime.  I wish I had stockpiled this body butter.

Samhain Soft Bubbling Scrub – 2oz ($3.50):

I find the scent of this a little too subtle, it’s actually quite hard for me to detect.  As an ex-smoker, I made Mr. L have a sniff (incase it was my deadened sense of smell) but no, he affirms that in the scrub, it’s a very light scent.  Described as rustling leaves, chilled winds … Freshly turned earth, wet leaves, and a cool herb laden wind carrying spectres and spooks! I desperately wanted to evoke all those things… but I’m just getting a light herbal scent that I can’t quite place.

The scrub formula however, is lovely.  It melts (but not too quickly) on my skin as I massage and produces a gentle lather that cleans effectively whilst rinsing away nicely.  I’ve since been back to the site to order a full-size bubbling scrub in a different scent.

.

Whilst delivery to the UK isn’t extortionate, it does make you realise that these are heavy products and as such… you’ll be paying for the pleasure of having them shipped across the Atlantic.  This first order of 2 sample sized jars came to a very reasonable $5.64 for shipping.  My second order with nearly $15 of it going toward shipping costs, made me wince a little.  But as I said, it’s not like these are pigment samples now is it?

Both Halloween limited fragrances above are (mostly) out of stock now on the website, there are a few straggling items left behind… but for Haus of Gloi, it’s onwards and upwards with the introduction of the Yule collection set for the 7th November.  I’ve already purchased a Parkin Pumpkin Butter (and a few other bits and bobs) and I’m going to find it VERY hard to resist the new Eggnoggin, my all-time favourite Xmas scent! (I told you I was a gourmand!).

Bring it on!
.

P.S. There are some great blogs out there with reviews of the various scents… check out Phyrra, Le Gothique, ShizzleNizzle for starters!

Precision Nails R04 – The After After Party NOTD

Posted by Lipglossiping On November - 2 - 2010

Another polish  from the Precision Nails Glam Rock Collection, this time a little number called The After After Party (R04).

It’s a sophisticated midnight blue with shimmer that looks very clean and elegant against a cool, pale skintone.

I was concerned that the inky blue might stain my nails, so I doubled up on the base coat… but I’m pleased to report that it didn’t even so much as stain my cuticles.  Good job!

As with the other shimmers in the range, I wish that it had just a touch more sparkle.  In the bottle, the multi-coloured shimmer is very special and that doesn’t translate to the nail.  Having said that, it’s still a very beautiful midnight blue with just enough shimmer to keep it interesting.

Another three coater, it’s one of those polishes that need that last coat to really shine.  Application was good and wear has been fine.

Precision is available to buy online from their website or Venus Nail & Beauty with bottles priced at an extremely affordable £5.99 (ish) each.

Avon Glimmersticks Diamonds Eye Liner

Posted by Lipglossiping On October - 30 - 2010

Something else that caught my eye during the recent Avon event were their range of Glimmerstick Diamond Eye Liners.  Being the magpie that I am, my eyes were drawn to these sparkly creations from 20ft away.

Currently available in a range of 6 colours, I was lured in by the cool tones and made off with the blue and plum shades named: Twilight Sparkle and Sugar Plum respectively.

I do love pencil eyeliners, they’re so versatile and I often use smudged coloured liners as an alternative to eyeshadow on lazy days.  I thought that these might bring a bit of sparkle to the festive season… and I was right!

The texture of the Avon Glimmersticks Diamond Eye Liners is a little hard and they definitely benefit from being warmed up on the back of my hand before applying to the delicate eye area.  Although in stick form, they look hugely glittery… once applied, the effect is somehow sophisticated.  It’s not subtle… but it’s not childish glitterbomb either.

The base colour of the liner holds the sparkle successfully without too much fall out, even after smudging.

Of the two shades that I was given, Twilight Sparkle is the knock out… it’s truly luminous and I’m loving adding a small amount of this under my lower lashes to spice up a bronze eye.  I haven’t applied these along the waterline because I’m not OK with the idea of having glitter so close to my eyeballs but they wear most of the day applied along the lashline.

One issue I have found with these is that the lid is quite hard to remove!  I destroyed the nib of Twilight Sparkle (as you can see in the photo) because I really had to yank at the top to remove… which resulted in a clumsy side swipe and a swift guillotine action!

The Avon Glimmersticks Diamonds Eye Liners are currently half price on the Avon website, priced at £3 each.  An absolute steal, I assure you!

While I’ve got your attention… I’ve updated my original Avon SuperShock Gel Eyeliner post to include a photo and a swatch of the liner in Silver as per your requests.  You can find the link here (scroll to the bottom for the update).

Precision Nails R01 Glam Metal NOTD

Posted by Lipglossiping On October - 29 - 2010

I mentioned last week a nail polish that had instantly hit all the right notes and soared into my top Winter favourites list.  Here it is:

Glam Metal by Precision Nails is a beautiful gunmetal polish with an array of multicoloured sparkle.  The sparkle is subtle, perhaps just a touch too subtle.  I would have been doing cartwheels had it been just a little more apparent.  As it stands, this is a stunning shade for a Winter manicure.  The finish makes the polish look almost chrome-like (in that slightly grungey way I love).  I’m not sure if you can make out from the swatch above… but the gunmetal isn’t an out-and-out grey.. it has the teeniest hint of purple/taupe to it.  You can see why I’m loving this can’t you?

Application was good, thinner rather than thicker and the above shows three coats.  Drying time is average and wear has been good with no chips to report.

Precision is available to buy online from their website or Venus Nail & Beauty with bottles priced at around £5.99 each.

Models Own Vintage Pink & Prussian Blue NOTD

Posted by Lipglossiping On October - 28 - 2010

It’s a double NOTD today!

I received a couple of Models Own new nail polish shades the other week and finally got a chance to wear them last weekend.  I was a bit dubious about Vintage Pink when I spied it in the bottle… it’s kinda…. fud.

It’s something my Nan would have worn… had she worn nail polish.  That makes sense in my head.

What I’m trying to say is… throw in a couple of mint imperials, a plastic rain-proof headscarf, a shopping bag that doubles up as a trolley and a pint of guiness and you’ve got this nail polish.  Everytime I look at my nails, I need to double check the mirror to assess the length of my crowsfeet.

I’m not feeling it.

However, application was fabulous… which is just as well really ‘cos old ladies get the shakes.

Moving on…

Models Own Prussian Blue is more my cuppa tea.  It’s a bright royal blue that lends itself really well to a bit of mattification (is that a word?).  It’s a nice shade for the winter and compliments my cool tones well.

Both polishes were done in two coats and I’m not sure if the formula has been re-jigged since I last tried a Models Own polish back in the Spring… but these applied really nicely and far less thickly than I expected based on previous experiences.

I didn’t keep Vintage Pink on much longer than it took to go for a ride round the block on my mobility scooter, but wear was great on the matte!  It wasn’t until the 3rd day that I began to notice a bit of tip wear… I’m just not used to mattes lasting that well, are you?

The 11 new shades are shown above…

Any of them taking your fancy?

Models Own polishes can be purchased online or in Boots stores nationwide, priced at £5 each.

E.L.F Studio Blush in Passion Pink & Fuchsia Fusion

Posted by Lipglossiping On October - 26 - 2010

I was sent these a couple of months ago but only got the chance to photograph and review E.L.F’s NARS Albatross dupe – Gotta Glow before my camera kicked the bucket.

I’d like to show you the other two that were released at the same time as Gotta Glow.  I hope the pictures and swatches are useful.

Fuchsia Fusion is a glitter bomb of a blush.  A slightly muted raspberry rose shade with silver chunky sparkles.  Texture is a bit hard but the pan gives up a lot of powder when you pass the brush over the top.  I personally wouldn’t bring this blush within 10 yards of my face until I’ve tapped off at least some of the glitter.

Pink Passion is my preference of the two.  A proper dolly pink matte blush that feels chalky but soft.  Pigmentation is impressive for the price and you could do far worse than this blush for double the money.

If only that glitter in Fuchsia Fusion were a little finer, I’d be giving a double thumbs up.

Both blushes are priced at £3.50 and available online from the ELF website.

Accessorize Illusion Aztec Nail Polish NOTD

Posted by Lipglossiping On October - 26 - 2010

When I was in London last week I was on the hunt for some of the new Accessorize Illusion nail polishes… you know, the duochrome ones.  Sadly, I only found one solitary polish and I nearly had to beat someone up to get my hands on it first.  It’s ok, I only broke a couple of her fingers… she can always paint the other hand.

It was totally worth it though right?  Look at those gorgeous purple/green/amber flashes! *dies*

Please excuse my death-warmed up hands… we were having double glazing fitted and the house was an ice-box sans windows.  My hands were ready to drop right off.

What d’ya think?

That is a bloody gorgeous duochrome to feed our inner 8 year old’s craving for something PURRRRRRDY right?

Application isn’t too shabby but it did need a good 3 coats and a healthy splodge of quick dry top coat for optimum shininess.  Wear has been good… no chips, just some minor tip wear.  Removal was a bit of a pain thanks to the glittery bits but othing too soul destroying.

My niece came over yesterday and the first thing I did was thrust my nails in her face and demand to know if she’d ever seen anything like so completely amazing?  She looked at me in the way only a 7 year old can when embarrassed by someone old enough to know better.

But she agreed, it was pretty cool.

Priced at £4 each for 10ml… Accessorize Nail Polishes are available instore (though I can only ever find a couple – usually by the tills), online (full selection) and I believe they’re coming to/are already in Superdrug?  Or did I imagine that bit…

Anyway, the moral of the story is… go and hunt them down, even if it means maiming your fellow shoppers in the process.

I promised some decent swatches of some of the goodies that my beautiful friend Julia sent me from her home country, the Philippines!  Is there anything more exciting than surprise swap parcels from far away destinations?  Errr NO!

By the way… check out the backdrop, same location but finally entered the 21st Century and got ourselves some of that new-fangled double-glazing stuff – here’s hoping this Winter will feel warmer than the last!

Ok, so back to the 4U2 I-Pro Professional Eye Make-Up Palette in Contemporary (what a mouthful!)…

Nicely packaged in a sturdy plastic housing that feels secure and substantial… it opens to reveal a large, clear and distortion-free mirror and 8 vibrant, shimmering eyehadow shades.

The shades all lean toward the pastel, so this will make a perfect choice for some fresh, Spring looks.  All pans have a texture like butter with a colour payoff that matches our own Sleek Makeup offerings.  The difference being that I don’t get the same amount of fall-out with these shades as I do with the Sleek eyeshadows.

And some swatches (on bare skin)…

Aren’t they lovely?

Colour me jealous… I want this brand to be accessible in the UK!  Who says we get all the best stuff? *sulk*

I believe (after conversion) that this retails at around £13 a palette?  You get about 2.5g of product per pan which works out at around £1.60 per eyeshadow.  I do love an economical purchase!

Are you currently lusting after anything from foreign shores?  Spill the beans!

Precision Nails Glam Rock Collection

Posted by Lipglossiping On October - 18 - 2010

I was recently introduced to Salon nail brand Precision during a press event and although not a brand I’d encountered before, my eye was immediately drawn to their new collection entitled Glam Rock.

The overall look of the products is sleek with their OPI-esque packaging, heavyweight bottles and even contoured handles!

The Glam Rock collection comprises of 6 darker, slighty industrial shades which all fit in well with the concept.

R01: Glam Metal – warm charcoal base with multi coloured shimmer
R02: U Rock & I Roll – Industrial dark grey creme
R03: VIP Very Important Polish – Berry purple with multi coloured shimmer
R04: The After After Party – Navy with multi coloured shimmer
R05: Rebel Red in You – Black with Red Glitter
R06 : Party Like a Rockstar – Gold with multi coloured shimmer

I’m really late in swatching these… I’ve been looking at them longingly for about a month, but having been without camera means that I’ve got a hell of a lot of catching up to do now!

I’ll leave you with one swatch shot.  Here’s R05: Rebel Red in You

The red glitter suspended in a black base is not an original concept.  I’m thinking China Glaze Lubu Heels, Eyeko Vampira, Color Club Red Velvet etc.. etc… but it’s a good idea well executed here by Precision.  I have no complaints about quality, infact the bottle and brush are simply divine.

It did require three thin coats to achieve the above finish… but if you’re a little more heavy handed than me, you would be done in two.

What I will say for this collection is that so far I’ve worn two from the six shades I was given and one of them has just easily jumped into my top 20 Winter polishes of all time.  It’s THAT gorgeous.  I’ll get it posted up later in the week.

Precision is available to buy online from their website or Venus Nail & Beauty with bottles priced at around £5.99 each.

BarryM Dusky Mauve vs. Chanel Paradoxal – Um DUPE!

Posted by Lipglossiping On October - 16 - 2010

With all this Chanel vs. BarryM nail polish dupe talk… how could I possibly have resisted CHARGING down my local Superdrug as fast as my fat little trotters could carry me (ok, I drove) before scooping up a bottle of BarryM’s new nail polish sensation Dusky Mauve to compare for myself?

Well I couldn’t.  Hence this post – duh.

So is it?  Isn’t it?

It most certainly is.

BarryM’s Dusky Mauve Nail Paint is a practically perfect dupe for Chanel’s Paradoxal – I’ll let the photos do the talking.

When Bazza met Coco… *cue music*

The only teeniest, tiniest difference between the two is that I feel the BarryM version may have a touch more sparkle in direct sunlight… but I’m not even 100% confident on that.

If you had wanted to indulge in Chanel’s Paradoxal but couldn’t quite stretch to the £16.50 required to do so… put those pennies towards the £2.95 dupe of the year and head down to Superdrug for BarryM’s Dusky Mauve instead.  No one will be able to tell the difference.

If your local Superdrug/Boots are out of stock, don’t forget that you can also buy BarryM’s Dusky Mauve Nail Paint online from the BarryM website which ships internationally.
