Deal Alert: Massive saving! Elemis Tri-Enzyme Set on QVC (TSV)

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 20 - 2011

Fancy a new luxury skincare regime to ease you gently into the cooler months?  How about saving around 60% while you’re at it?

For today only, you can pick up an Elemis Tri-Enzyme three-piece set on QVC for a hugely discounted price of £44.80

Let me show you how the saving works out.  For a total of £44.80, you get…

1 x Elemis Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Facial Wash (200ml) – RRP: £28.00 (roughly)
1 x Elemis Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Gel Mask (50ml) – RRP: £46.00
1 x Elemis Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Night Cream (50ml) – RRP: £41 (roughly)

Combined, the usual RRP on these three products would be approximately £115!

If you’d like to read a review of the mask, I featured it last year – also be sure to read the comments because there’s some interesting additional input from an esthetician AND a biochemist!

If I hadn’t just bought myself a new lens for my camera this week (£320 ouch), I would be having a little splurge today.

Do you ever take advantage of the TSVs on QVC?

Smashbox Softbox Nude Eyeshadow Palette

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 19 - 2011

Fifty quid is a lot of money to spend on an eyeshadow palette when you’ve got brands like Urban Decay banging ’em out for under £40 but I came across some photos of this Smashbox palette from a press day when I was archiving some pictures and thought I’d tell you a bit about this rather pretty offering from Smashbox.

The potential to be a neutral lovers dream, the Smashbox Softbox Nude Eyeshadow Palette is a good choice for everyday looks with a few matte inclusions to encourage a broad appeal.  It features nine muted eyeshadow shades and two cream liners (one on each end).  Also included is a double ended brush making it an attractive proposition for those who are looking for a single set of wearable shadows in one compact package.

At fifty pounds, it’s not cheap but that is also one of the reasons I’m posting about it today.  The Smashbox Softbox Nude Eyeshadow Palette was released as a limited edition Summer launch so if it is catching your eye, keep an eye out for potential bargains on this palette across the web or perhaps even instore at Debenhams as the Autumn/Winter products supercede.

Kirstie at Beaut.ie has a great, indepth review on the palette here.

The Smashbox Softbox Nude Eyeshadow Palette is available to purchase online at Debenhams.com priced at £50.00

EDIT: £30 online at QVC – what did I tell ya?! (thanks for the spot Joanne!)

Inexpensive Beauty Find: Baci False Eyelashes

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 19 - 2011

BuyEyelashes.co.uk got in touch with me a little while ago to tell me about one of their newest brands, Baci.  Known more traditionally for their lingerie(!), Baci also offer a range of very inexpensive eyelashes starting from only £2.00 a pair.

I wore a set in yesterday’s FOTD and a few of you picked up on them so I thought I’d strike while the iron was hot and pop a post up today talking about them in a little more detail.

The ones I wore in yesterday’s post were #660 – they’re the ones in the foreground of the picture above.  They’re pretty substantial and have a thick band that definitely needs loosening up before application.  I’m STILL pretty rubbish at applying false eyelashes and tend to favour midi-lashes just to add some flutter to the outer lashes.

I didn’t use the glue that these come with because it seemed pretty wimpy to be honest but the lashes themselves are very good for £2.00 a pair.  Sure, they’re quite synthetic, a little heavy on the eyes and they certainly wouldn’t be my ‘good’ lashes but these Bacis have a great curl, nice definition and just fine for the odd night out.

These particular ones also seem pretty indestructible (something I wasn’t expecting), I would definitely be able to get a couple of wears from the #660s!

Baci Lashes are priced from £2.00 and available to buy online from BuyEyelashes.co.uk in a variety of styles.

Recipe: Makloubeh / Maqluba (Upside Down)

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 18 - 2011

I know that when it comes to recipes on the blog, I’m all about the puddings.  But did you know, I like dinners too?

This is one of my favourite dinners in the entire world.  Did I mention that I like dinner, do you like dinner?  I like dinners A LOT so to have this one elevated to my top… *thinks*… TEN all time dinners is nothing to be sniffed at!

I might even like dinners more than I like makeup.  It’s THAT serious people.

Makloubeh (literally meaning Upside Down) is a family dish cooked in a large pot, originating from the Middle East.  My uncle was Jordanian (he passed away in 1996) and the entire family would pile over his house on New Years Day to feast on Makloubeh.  Then we’d all go play Boggle or Battleships or something else that makes me feel old whenever I remember it.

The traditional recipes online call for eggplant (my uncle never included it).  I add potato for no other reason than to protect the meat/rice from catching on the bottom of the pan.  Well, that and the fact that my family are potato fiends.

This dish is not very healthy.  Don’t be fooled by the inclusion of cauliflower.  YOU DEEP FRY IT.

A quick note about the meat.  My uncle always used lamb shoulder, which is expensive in the UK.  I use mince (ground beef or lamb) or chicken thigh.  We only have lamb in this dish if it’s a special occasion and I apparently never put enough in the pot.  My horrible brother has christened my version of Lamb Makloubeh, “McNoMeat”.

Makloubeh – serves 4 greedy ones:

Vegetable oil for frying
1 1/2 cups of rice (I use long-grain to keep better form when cooking)
500g Beef/Lamb Mince (you could use chicken thighs or lamb)
1 large head of cauliflower, broken into large florets
3 large potatoes, sliced about a cm thick
2 large onions, sliced
3 cloves of garlic – thinly sliced

2 Beef Oxo/Stock Cubes
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/2 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. ground pepper
1 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. ground cumin

3-4 tsp. salt

Unspecified amount of water!

1).  Salt the cauliflower and fry until dark brown (yes, really).  I use a deep fryer.  Cover a plate in kitchen towel and allow cooked cauliflower to rest on the plate once cooked.

2).  Pat sliced potatoes dry and deep fry until golden, transfer onto more kitchen towel to soak up the excess oil.

3).  Brown the meat and onions in a frying pan before adding all the spices and crumbling the stock cube over the mixture.

4).  Add about an inch of hot water to the pan, drop in the garlic and allow the meat to gently simmer for around 5 minutes.

5).  Take a large pot (something like this), add 2tbsp of oil and layer the potatoes on the bottom of the pan.  Spoon the (sloppy) meat and onion mixture over this before adding the cooked cauliflower.

6).
Add the uncooked rice and pour over enough hot water to barely cover the rice.

7).  Cover with a lid and cook on a medium heat (you want a gentle simmer) until the rice is cooked (20-30 minutes).  Don’t stir!

8).  Once the rice is cooked, all the water should have been absorbed.  If not, simmer for a little longer with the lid off.

9).
Grab a tray and line it with foil.  Tip the pot upside down (hence the name!) onto the tray and sprinkle with pine nuts.

10).  Stick it in the middle of the table and let people serve themselves, preferably with lots of natural yoghurt.

11).  Undo top button.

p.s. If you want to make your version a little healthier (and clearly less fun), you could probably roast the cauliflower and potatoes before adding them to the pot… probably.

Rest of the FOTD is helped along by…

I’ll do a daytime FOTD next, any requests to include a particular shade?

Deal Alert: Four Graze Boxes delivered to your door for just £5

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 18 - 2011

I’ve seen these Graze snack boxes reviewed on a number of beauty blogs over the last year and when I saw this deal pop up last night, I took the plunge!

The deal’s valid until midnight tonight and I’ve bought it for Mr. L because I’m still on mega-diet-from-hell until I’ve shed my final couple of stone.  It’s always the last push that’s the hardest huh?

Is £5 for 4 a good deal?  I know they sometimes give one away for a £1 but I don’t think you can get more than that.

Let me know if you indulge and more importantly, tell me what your favourite Graze selections are so I don’t choose the revolting ones!

Urban Decay 15 Year Anniversary Eyeshadow Collection: The Swatches

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 17 - 2011

I’ve posted about the packaging and I’ve posted individual close ups of the eyeshadows alongside their official descriptions.  This post will document the swatches from the new Urban Decay 15 Year Anniversary Eyeshadow Collection* alongside my thoughts on each eyeshadow.

Midnight Rodeo is as Anitacska has been warning me, the love-child of MC/MCRA.  A beautiful base colour, spoiled by chunky glitter that will be ALL over your face in minutes if you’re not very careful about tapping off as much glitter as possible.  Urgh.

Tainted is a disappointment to me too.  A slightly amped up lilac yet it looks more dirty mauvey in the pan, less… prissy and simply more exciting!  Still, the texture is nice, the gold shimmer is a pretty touch and it could well be a grower.  No glitter.

Deeper is a ridiculously well-pigmented shade of awesomeness.  Copper with a firey gold sparkle (not glitter), it’s like a big beasty teddy bear and will make a fantastic liner on green eyes.  It looks a touch ‘grainy’ in my swatch (like Mignight Rodeo) – it’s not… that’s my bad.

Midnight 15 is a velvet-smooth, pale silver taupe.  A great inner corner highlight or an allover wash to brighten the area.  It has some (not too many) silver glitter particles.

Junkshow is a shocking pink with violet flashes.  Smooth shimmer with no glitter, I can see this one getting a lot of use on days when I’m feeling a little brave!

M.I.A is one of the most buttery eye shadows I’ve ever swatched.  It’s a deep chocolate shimmer with no glitter.  Hugely versatile.

Vanilla, the obvious highlighter is a smooth pale gold.  No glitter.

Omen is a violet with strong blue flashes.  Clearly, it’s stunning and builds up with great intensity though you’ll find a dupe (albeit a more greasy version) for a £1 in MUA’s eyeshadows.  Glitter free.

Ace is a graphite that is a good shade lighter than my swatch suggests (sorry).  A nice alternative to black for darkening the crease colour with a good texture.  No glitter.

Flow is a beautiful, neutral lid shade.  A shimmery peach that doesn’t pull too warm for cool skin tones.  Very pretty if not hugely exciting.  No glitter.

Evidence is a cracking midnight blue with some great vivid flashes.  It benefits from some building up and has a slightly hard texture.  No glitter.

Blackout, it’s matte black.  Move along.

Chase almost looks foiled right?  Another ridiculously buttery eyeshadow with a high-metallic finish.  Very pretty and glitter-free.

Deep End is a beautiful green/blue mix that leans slightly more green to my eye.  It’s a pretty shimmer with impressive pigmentation.  No glitter.

Half Truth is a smoky purple with multi-coloured shimmer.  Probably the most unique shade in the palette and my favourite!  Tres jolie!

.

My top 5 shades:  Half Truth, Deeper, Chase, Evidence, M.I.A

The great big UK Tan Line!

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 16 - 2011

I received an interesting press release yesterday that shows the results of a nationwide survey on fake tanning.  It was conducted by YouTravel.com and I thought it was rather fun!

The regions most keen on their fake bake are the north-east and south-east of England, where renowned tanning capitals, Newcastle and Essex, can be found.  A staggering 81% of respondents from the South East claimed to have applied their tans from a bottle this year!

image courtesy of youtravel.com – click here to see full results

Perhaps indicative of just how rubbish I am at fake tanning, my region (the South West) came out with lowest score on the glow-o-meter with just 46% of us bothering to get our glows on.

How did your part of the UK stack up?  And what about you personally, are you a fake tan go-getter?

My tips for dealing with dry skin: cleansing

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 16 - 2011

I don’t usually do “tip” posts like these, infact I’m not sure that I’ve ever done one before.  So it’s with a little apprehension and a large dose of ‘Do I know what the hell I’m talking about?’ that I present to you some of my tips for dealing with dry skin.

What do I mean by dry skin?  Well, for me… my combo/dry skin is largely self-inflicted.  I know I don’t drink enough water (and always see a marked improvement when I do), I refuse to give up my cleansing oil addiction and although I’m leaning more toward kinder organic cleansing balms, I refuse to just ‘get rid’ of some of my more drying oils until they’re finished.  Waste not, want not as my Mum would say.

I don’t suffer too badly in the Summer, but come the end of October, my skin loses its glow and the biggest problem I have to battle are those dreaded flakies that make any foundation look like crap.

I’m breaking the tips into a couple of posts:  cleansing, treating, moisturising & makeup.  Please remember that I’m in no way an expert, I’ve just bumbled through a lot of trial and errors to find what works well for me.  So without further ado…

Cleansing

1.  I refuse to give up on my cleansing oils/balms for makeup removal, so try to find one that is as natural as they come.  That means no mineral oils or other Petrochemicals.  Let your second cleanse shift the residue rather than relying on the inbuilt emulsifying agents.

Suggested products: Inlight Organic Cleanser, Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish, Nude Cleansing Facial Oil, Spiezia Organic Facial Cleanser & Elemis Melting Cleansing Gel

2.  Don’t use your hands to wash!  Make sure you have a stockpile of your favourite flannels/muslins and use them to exfoliate!  I can’t abide ‘flappy’ muslin cloths and always opt for microfibre or generic flannels.  I buy 2 microfibre cloths for £1 in Asda (the home cleaning aisle!) but anything is better than nothing at all!

3.  Choose your cleanser carefully.  My skin always reacts most positively to the ‘boring’ cleansers on the market.  These are usually the creamy-type ones that don’t make any additional claims other than to gently cleanse your skin.  Avoid that ‘squeaky’ clean feeling like the plague.  We don’t have the excess sebum production of oilier types and can’t tolerate twice daily skin stripping from harsher cleansers.  Avoid SLS and Petrochemicals.

Suggested products: Bare Minerals Purifying Facial Cleanser, Lavera Organic Lemon Balm Facial Cleansing Gel, Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Cream & Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser.

4.  Mind that water!  Living in the South, our water supply tends to lean toward the alkaline end of the PH scale which can encourage dryness if you don’t use a PH balanced cleanser to even things out when washing.  Most ‘gentle’ cleansers are PH balanced by default but it goes a long way to explain why I’ve stopped simply splashing my skin with water in the mornings.  I thought I was helping by not over-cleansing.  Wrong!

.

I’m sure there are lots of other little gems out there to cleanse effectively without over-stripping our skin but these are the ones that I find work for me.

Do feel free to add any CLEANSING tips you’ve discovered from dealing with dry skin, I’d love to hear them.  I’ll be dealing with exfoliating, treating, moisturising, lifestyle type tips later.

Urban Decay 15 Year Anniversary Eyeshadow Collection: The Shadows

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 16 - 2011

The new Urban Decay 15 Year Anniversary Eyeshadow Collection* offers fifteen new shades, that’s one for each year they’ve been around.  Fifteen years huh?  I wonder when they launched the brand to the UK market?  I can probably remember back to around 2005/6 but don’t quote me on that… as I think I’ve said before, it was their nail polishes that used to catch my attention back then.

Anyway, 15 years… 15 new shades.  Let’s take a closer look at them.

Midnight Rodeo (medium metallic brown w/silver and gold glitter)

Tainted (pale matte purple with golden shimmer)

Deeper (deep shimmery golden brown)

Midnight 15 (oyster pearl w/silver glitter)

Junkshow (bright pink w/fuchsia shift)

M.I.A. (soft shimmery dark brown)

Vanilla (shimmery white gold)

Omen (shimmery metallic bright purple w/blue shift)

Ace (dark gunmetal shimmer)

Flow (soft peach shimmer)

Evidence (deep metallic blue)

Blackout (darkest, most saturated black)

Chase (metallic bright bronze)

Deep End (bright teal shimmer)

Half Truth (shimmery smoky purple)

.

As far as the range of shades go, I think Urban Decay have taken a good line with this palette.  They seem to have placed a focus on the usable, a term which shouldn’t be confused with neutral.

However it may suffer from being a little non-commital, I’ve already heard grumbles from neutral-lovers saying that it reminds them too much of the Naked Palette (I guess there’s only so many variations of Bronze out there) whilst the brights fans may feel a little ignored with this release.

I’ve also read a couple of grumbles that there are no mattes in this palette which I have to agree is a real shame as Urban Decay have released some incredible and under-rated matte shades over the years.

Before swatching (my opinion may change!), the initial stand-out beauties for me are: Tainted, Midnight 15, Ace, Evidence and Half Truth.  I hope they don’t disappoint.

Swatches tomorrow but in the mean-time… Best shade there?  How about the worst?

NOTD: Rimmel London 60 Seconds – Blue Me Away

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 15 - 2011

I was sticky beaking along the bargain shelves in Boots (as you do… frequently) and spotted this rather pretty nail polish that had been reduced down to something ridiculous like 75p.  This probably means it’s discontinued and you won’t be able to find it but humour me anway.

Rimmel London 60 Seconds isn’t a formula I’ve played with before.  I’ve previously tried and disliked the Lycra Pro range so have gently steered myself away from Rimmel polishes on that basis which makes me very glad that this bargain price sticker turned my head.

The polish is packed full of fine red sparkle, turning what was essentially a blue base into purple once worn on the nails. This makes the name Blue Me Away rather redundant when looking down at what is clearly a warm-toned purple polish.

Application wasn’t too shady, fairly smooth but I did get a bit of drag around the edges of the nail bed and the polish doesn’t apply kindly unless the brush is well loaded.  Other than that, I was done in two (fairly easy) coats.

I have to take issue with the whole “60 seconds” thing too, seeing as this was one of the slowest-drying polishes I’ve worn in months.  You’re definitely going to need a quick dry top coat with this one.

Other than those niggles, for £3.469 (or less if you can find them on offer), I’m pleased to be reintroduced to a brand I’d avoided when it came to nails.

Rimmel London 60 Seconds polishes can be found instore and online at Boots et al.
